The reaction to immigrants of western democratic societies shows the ambivalence and falsehoods of its democratic political culture, and therefore the need for political commitment to universal fulfilment of human rights also among ouserlves.[ES] El discurso público sobre la inmigración está dominado por clichés que dificultan un análisis sereno de los datos disponibles y de los factores que intervienen en el fenómeno migratorio. Sin embargo, sólo una atención a su complejidad puede abrir el camino a la comprensión teórica y a evitar los callejones sin salida de la discriminación y la xenofobia.
