The characteristic zigzag shaped first order stipes and alternating lateral second order stipes formed through monoprogressive branching are characteristic and are not shared with other dendroid genera. Ptilograptus is transferred from the Callograptidae to the Dendrograptidae based on its stipe and thecal development.
