This ar ticle surveys the use of this software and its possibilities by focusing on Zotero, Mendeley, Refworks and Endnote Basic. It discusses practical problems, recognising that the problems generated by the inadequacies of citation styles in Spanish. This will have to be resolved in order to realize the potential of these digital instruments.[ES] Conocer los gestores bibliográficos o gestores de citas debe considerarse una las competencias digitales necesarias para los especialistas en ciencias humanas, incluida la historia. Aunque este tipo de aplicaciones informáticas están ampliamente difundidas en las universidades españolas, su presencia en las ciencias históricas aún es escasa.
