Sumario:[EN] The purpose of this paper is to study the presence of water in the essay literary production of Silvia Baron Supervielle. How is water expressed in her works ? Which terms and images are employed to refer to it ? Which is its function ? To answer these questions, it is necessary to draw upon Gaston Bachelard’s research on the four elements, chiefly on water and its representation in literature as well those foundational myths of mankind which are still echoed in a great part of contemporary universal literature. Such studies by Bachelard contribute to understanding what this poetics of water consists in as developed by Argentinean writer Silvia Baron Superville in her essays. We will see that what is indeed a key factor in her writings takes shape in a series of paradoxes which account for the expression of a passionate life and various complex reflections. As it is, whereas the author initially deals with water in terms of a powerful and castrating force distancing her from her roots, such water may be subsequently observed to allow her to restore the links with her birthplace. Water is not only a natural and symbolic frontier but also an obstacle that breaks with her past. However, water simultaneously bridges the gap between the author and her past thanks to her memories, thereby leading to her present life in Paris, the life that she has chosen as a writer
