Sumario:An alternative approach for the mesh generation process in wind farm modeling is explained, based on metric-driven mesh adaptation to the actuator disc models of the turbines. Unlike the standard approach based treating the actuator discs as a geometry at the preprocessing step, herein the mesh is adapted to match a level set function that models the actuator discs of a wind farm. The mesh is adapted to obtain a unitary mesh with respect to a metric derived from the level set representation of the actuator discs. This novel representation and discretization of the actuator discs, also enables performing mesh adaptation to the solution. We have implement a 2D wind farm CFD framework, based on actuator disc modeling of the turbines, and we have performed mesh adaptation to the disc model and the target solution (velocity magnitude) simultaneously. We have validated the convergence of the framework and to the adaptive-based actuator disc modeling. To conclude, we have presented several results that illustrate the applicability of the adaptive-based wind farm simulation framework. We have used the framework to simulate one disc and a two discs scenarios featuring turbine realignment according to the actual wind direction during the simulation. In addition, we have simulated a full wind farm configuration featuring 108 turbines, performing mesh adaptation to the solution.
