| Sumario: | Melatonin is a ubiquitous molecule in living beings with active biological functions. In plants, it plays important biological roles in seed germination, root development, growth, flowering, fruit ripening and even senescence. In this work, the effect of exogenous melatonin in different organs/stages of pepper plants have been investigated, including seeds, seedlings and fruits. It was found that, melatonin did not affect seed germination, but it reduced growth of seedlings and provoked important distortion of the leave anatomy. In fruits, it was found that melatonin alters some organoleptic properties, modifying the levels of vitamin C and soluble sugars. Although more research is necessary, this suggest that the treatment with melatonin could be used as a biotechnological tool to improve the nutritional and nutraceutical properties of pepper fruits. |
