Après l’émerveillement initial, un changement de regard est manifeste dans la production française des années vingt qui, dépassant l’approche descriptive des premiers opérateurs, trouve en Espagne une inspiration poétique, dramatique et visuelle féconde. La fascination cinématographique pour l’Espagne s’avère d’autant plus stimulante qu’elle coïncide avec un processus de légitimation artistique décisif pour le cinéma en France. Les cinéastes de la génération émergeant après-guerre qui s’engagent pour une reconstruction de la cinématographie nationale, tout en impulsant, à la fois, un renouvellement esthétique, retrouvent dans en Espagne un terrain fécond pour leurs recherches. Tout en restant un territoire exotique et fantasmé, l’Espagne permet l’émergence de certaines thématiques ancrées dans la modernité de l’époque, telles que l’archaïsme, l’excès de la fête, la sensualité féminine ou le mélodrame. De même, du point de vue formel, les paysages, la lumière et les rythmes espagnols deviennent une source d’inspiration et de modernisation stimulante pour l’exploration de voies esthétiques nouvelles. Cette étude vise à analyser l’imaginaire cinématographique de l’Espagne mobilisé par certains cinéastes français des années vingt, en tenant compte du contexte culturel et cinématographique d’où il émerge. Le but est de mettre à jour les enjeux esthétiques que l’Espagne et l’imaginaire espagnol suscitent dans la production cinématographique française des années vingt.Long a source of inspiration for the French arts, Spain and its imaginary played an important role in the French cinematographic production of the early twentieth century. Following the initial enchantment with the moving image, a change in approach developed in 1920s French cinema. Surpassing the descriptive approach of the first camera operators, French cinema found in Spain a dramatic and visually fertile source of poetic inspiration. The cinematographic fascination for Spain turned out to be all the more stimulating as it coincided with the artistic legitimation of cinema in France. Filmmakers of the post-First World War generation seeking a national cinematographic reconstruction and calling for an aesthetic renewal found in Spain a rich terrain for their search. While remaining in the realm of fantasy and the exotic, Spain made possible in 1920s French cinema the emergence of certain themes anchored in the modernity of the period, such as archaism, hedonism, female sensuality, and melodrama. Similarly, from a formal point of view, Spanish landscapes, light, and rhythms became a inspiring source of inspiration and modernization for French filmmakers’ exploration of new aesthetic paths. This study aims to examine the cinematographic imaginary of Spain deployed by certain 1920s French filmmakers, by considering the cultural and cinematographic context in which it emerged.
