Description
Summary:[EN] In order to explain the high rates of salinity in the surface waters of the River Ebro basin in Northern Spain, a catographic synthesis of the gypsiferous lithofacies documented to date has been made at the scale of 1:200,000. In this paper a map (1:2,500,000 scale) showing the distribution of gypsiferous formations within the basin is presented. All the literature reviewed remains accesible through two catalogs of individal filing cards: one contains the original information and the other rearranges it in a standardized way and can be used as a computerized data base. These geological formations are spread over an area of about 1.9 . 10.000.000 hectares (22% of the entire basin), wich fully supports the significant contribution of gypsum dissolution to the primary salinity in streams and rivers.
