The image of the shipwreak facilitated the comparation with determined spiritual values closely related with the mentioned sacrament. We also find the use of the same metaphor in literature and penitential teatrise of the time. The subject ended becoming a topos, know by the public and ilustrated in some catalan gotic works of artDurante la baja edad media nació la predicación destinada a los laicos. El control de la misma dependía de las órdenes mendicantes. La influencia del público se puso de manifiesto con el auge de los exempla en la composición de los sermones. Los exempla se convirtieron en los principales instrumentos de difusión de la penitencia. La imagen del naufragio facilitaba la comparación con determinados valores espirituales íntimamente relacionados con el citado sacramento. El recurso a esta misma metáfora lo encontramos también en la literatura y en los tratados penitenciales de la época.
