| Sumario: | Basque has developed a vigorous folk tradition, whose most prominent example can be found in the province of Soule. Souletin folk dramatical genres are rich in multilingual passages, which illustrate the particular sociolinguistic situation of the country in the past. On the one hand, I will demonstrate that the use of languages other than Basque in Souletin folk literature is closely related to the formulaic language, including greetings, introductions, curses, prayers, swearwords or insults. On the other hand, I shall argue that code-switching can be considered a stylistic gure as such. The study is based on a corpus of dramatic texts from the 18th and 19th centuries and complements Urkizu’s works (1998, 2002). |
