Summary:[EN] How do young people relate to the aesthetic and artistic knowledge? How does school knowledge affect their construction as producers of visual culture? On wich other knowledges, not purely academic, do they base their productions outside the classroom? What educational value do non-school spaces provide? To respond these questions, this article pays attention to the activity of young people as producers of visual culture. The study is part of the research project "Youth as Visual Culture Producers: Artistic Skills and Knowledge in Secondary Education" (EDU 2009G13 12) which argues the enormous gap between school and non-school contexts, and concludes that secondary education in Spain is not taking sufficient account of how young people relate to the knowledge inside and outside of school. Under this framework, the text presents a case study that explores the relationships established between the artistic and aesthetic knowledges acquired by two young people both inside and outside the classroom. The tools used for this exploration are the interview and content analysis. The results of this study are contrasted with those extracted from a questionnaire in which 86 young people between 14 and 18 provided data on their role as producers of visual culture in school and non-school contexts. The analysis helps us to underline the importance that knowledge acquired outside the school have for young people as producers. This fact allows us to understand the formative sense acquired by non-school spaces. It also encourages us to examine the place that school can occupy in the acquisition of artistic knowledge. In short, it invites us to ask what we can learn from young people’s ways of learning.
