Sumario:Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), including Crohn's disease (CD) and Ulcerative colitis (UC), is characterized by a chronic relapsing intestinal inflammation. Although its etiology remains unknown, it involves complex interactions between the immune response and genetic, environmental or microbial factors such as Short-Chain Fatty Acids (SCFAs) which are implicated in intestinal epithelial cell (IEC) homeostasis as well as in the regulation of the gut immune system. In turn, IECs are critical for maintaining the intestinal barrier and can secrete and respond to various mediators that regulate the immune response in the gut.The Unfolded Protein Response (UPR) is a mechanism triggered by the accumulation of unfolded or misfolded proteins within the ER lumen, a condition known as Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) stress. The UPR plays a critical role in maintaining the homeostasis of the intestinal epithelium by keeping the balance between the microbiota, IECs and the immune response.
