description [Description of methods used for collection/generation of data] Periodical water sampling for several biogeochemical variables was performed during the campaigns of the BOATS monitoring network. Monthly samples were collected from the same depth as the sensors deployed in the BP and SMB BOATS stations at 1m and 4m, respectively. At the CS station, surface water samples were obtained fortnightly. Variables apart from temperature (Celsius) and Salinity (psu) obtained were nitrous oxide (N2O), nutrients nitrate and nitrite (NO3−, NO2−) dissolved organic carbon (DOC), Chlorophyll a (Chl a), and dissolved oxygen (DO) in BP and SMB stations.

Monthly samples were collected from the same depth as the sensors deployed in the BP and SMB BOATS stations at 1m and 4m, respectively. At the CS station, surface water samples were obtained fortnightly. Variables apart from temperature (Celsius) and Salinity (psu) obtained were nitrous oxide (N2O), nutrients nitrate and nitrite (NO3−, NO2−) dissolved organic carbon (DOC), Chlorophyll a (Chl a), and dissolved oxygen (DO) in BP and SMB stations.[Methods for processing the data] To measure N₂O concentrations, duplicate water samples were collected in 120 mL serum vials, sealed with grey-butyl stoppers and aluminum crimps, preserved with HgCl₂, and stored upside-down. Analyses were conducted at the AQUANITROMET lab (IIM-CSIC, Vigo, Spain) using static headspace equilibration and gas chromatography (GC) with electron capture detection, following De la Paz et al. (2015). A headspace was created by injecting 20 mL of nitrogen gas while withdrawing an equal volume of sample. After shaking and equilibrating for at least 12 hours, headspace gas was displaced into the GC using brine. An Agilent 7890 GC was calibrated with a NOAA-certified standard and two N₂O-in-N₂ mixtures from Air Liquide. An additional SCOR-certified standard was used during inter-laboratory comparison testing (Wilson et al., 2018). The analytical precision was 0.5%, based on 400 replicates. To obtain DO concentrations in seawater, samples were collected in sealed flasks and fixed immediately. Measurements were performed within 24 h upon collection stored in the dark through an automated potentiometric modification of the original Winkler method by Benson and Krause (1984) using a Metrohm 808 Titrator instrument, with an accuracy of the technique of ± 2.9 μmol kg−1. DOC samples were collected in borosilicate bottles, filtered with pre-combustioned Whatman GF/F glass fiber filters, and stored in pre-combustioned borosilicate vials with the addition of 25 μL of orthophosphoric acid (H3PO4). The determination was performed with catalytic oxidation at a high temperature (680 °C) using a Shimadzu TOC-L analyzer, as reported by Álvarez-Salgado and Miller (1998). Chl a samples were collected in glass bottles, and 150 mL were filtered with Whatman GF/F glass fiber filters. Chl a extraction was performed with 90 % acetone for 24 h at 4 °C in dark conditions (Knap et al., 1996), and samples were measured with a fluorometer (Turner Designs Instrument, Model trilogy). The fluorometer was calibrated with a pure Chl a standard from Anacystis nidulans algae (Sigma Chemical Company).Funding for this work was provided by the projects PID2021-123723OB-C21 (CYCLE), RTI2018-095441-B-C21 (SuMaEco) and, the BBVA Foundation project Posi-COIN and the Balearic Islands Government project SEPPO (PRD2018/18).
