Descripción
Sumario:Following a cognitive-linguistic and relevance-theoretic approach to language, this book considers metaphor as a bridge that brings together mind and language through the analysis of the antithetical mechanisms of verbal mitigation and offence (euphemism and dysphemism) in the universal taboo of sex. All kinds of erotic desires and sexual practices, together with issues related to sexual orientation, are verbalized through metaphors and therefore fall within the scope of the book. This volume gives the reader a chance to reflect on the social and communicative functions that sexual metaphors perform in a corpus of more than two hundred postings taken from Internet forums. In this way, Sex in Mind and Language provides an account of how real language users understand sex in real contexts of use. The linguistic analysis presented yields insights into the way the sexual taboo is understood in present-day English and allows to have access to attitudes, value judgments and emotions which are usually communicated implicitly through figurative language.
