Descripción
Sumario:[eng] The people who during the last centuries have entered the Coves del Drac have wanted to leave their mark in the form of graffi ti on the speleothems and cave walls. Th is fact shows us that a new interest arises on the visitors, which from this moment stop entering the caves due to necessity (shelter, water supply, etc) and go to enjoy a new and magical underground space. Th ree main circumstances propitiated that, at the end of 19th century, the popularity of Coves del Drac becomes remarkably increased. On the one hand, the loss of three visitors in 1878 must be highlighted together with, on the other hand, the subsequent generalization of the guided visits to the cavern; fi nally is worth to mention the great impulse entailed by the explorations of the French speleologist Édouard-Alfred Martel in 1896, that supposed a notable expansion of the cave sectors accessible to travelers and tourists. Th e transcription of more than a thousand graffi ti allows us to analyze diff erent aspects of visitors, whether personal references ‒such as names, professions, origins‒, impressions, date of visits, drawings, etc. Most of the analyzed graffi ti are located in chambers that are currently outside the tourist route, one of them especially and directly related to the episode of the loss of visitors occurred in 1878. Two speleothems with their own names ‒Columnes dels Noms (Columns of the Names) and Descans dels Extraviats (Rest Place of Lost Visitors)‒, lodge more than 700 graffi ti. Among them we found signatures of doctors, aeronauts, military, clergymen, offi cials, as well as infi nity of anonymous people of which we only know the name.
