Our argument elaborates on a capability-based perspective to explain different SME collaboration paths to innovate. Using configurational thinking and applying cs/QCA method in 6315 SMEs in Spain, a moderate innovation country, findings show 12 different conjunctive collaboration paths representing modes of innovation driving innovation, mostly unobservable from traditional regression-based methods.
