In general, these materials have been used as counterparts without considering their influence in the global method. This review summarizes the counter electrodes, analyzing their pros and cons. In addition, the energy efficiency of the various configurations was reported, while the other performance indices were not included because of the lack of data provided in the literature. Nevertheless, their potential influence in crucial parameters like purity, efficiency, or stability was estimated based on their electrochemical properties.
