Sumario:Concerning road safety, overtaking to cyclists is one of the most dangerous maneuvers that appear in two-lane rural roads, for both motor vehicles and cyclists. The underlying cause is that vehicles must partially invade the opposite lane, while driving parallel to them. Cyclists are very vulnerable users, thus being under a situation of clear inferiority with the rest of vehicles. In addition, the maneuver entirely depends on drivers, involving many variables in a complex decision process to be carried out in a very short period of time. The present thesis focuses on the analysis of the phenomenon of overtaking of motor vehicles to cyclists on two-lane rural roads in order to deepen the determination of the associated risk levels. A detailed review of the existing literature about overtaking maneuvers has been performed, especially focusing on the data collection methodologies. This has allowed the author to an in-depth determination of what variables do intervene in the process. As a result, it has been concluded that the most appropriate system is based on the use of an instrumented bicycle. Likewise, studies on aerodynamic effects during overtaking have been reviewed, given their impact on the stability and safety of the rider. From this point onwards, a road and mountain bike have been instrumented and in-situ data have been collected from overtaking maneuvers along several two-lane rural roads in the regions of Valencia and Castellón. The data collection process involves lateral distance, relative and absolute speeds, trajectories, etc., by means of naturalistic observations. The data collected have been analyzed, obtaining different risk parameters associated with the overtaking maneuvers and proposing a series of design and operational recommendations for two-lane rural roads to improve the safety of cyclists. Likewise, the accident data of both the roads in which the tests were carried out and other additional ones of the Valencian Community have been compiled, allowing to establish correlations between the parameters of risk and the predicted accident rate, developing a model for estimating road crashes.
