Descripción
Sumario:[EN] In this article an interpretive analysis of one of the most characteristic elements of the administration that Spain established in the Philippines is proposed, that is, the preponderant role played by religious orders within the colonial structure. From an intentioned long-term approach, and from archival documents, printed sources and bibliography, in this work the reasons why the friars acquired such importance in the settlement enterprise from the beginning are analyzed; why congregations consolidated and maintained a unique position in the archipelago over the centuries are reviewed; a series of moments, causes and protagonists who questioned that situation are studied; and the keys to the complex reality of religious in the Philippines nineteenth century are highlighted.
