| Sumario: | This doctoral dissertation aims to interrogate the expression of British identities in contemporary thriller films (2000-2016), a period defined by events that challenged prevalent notions of nationhood and national identity in Great Britain. Through the analysis of a corpus with different subgenres within thrillers, this study examines how the genre interacts with the anxieties regarding British national identity that have generated a crisis culminating in the Brexit referendum. The research argues that thrillers can be considered a critical tool for the analysis of tensions and contradictions within British identities, as they contain the same conflicts in their inner structure. Therefore, this work focuses on the period between the turn of the millennium and the Brexit referendum, which has often been overlooked in academic discussions of thriller films, intending to fill a gap in the existing literature. It intends two interrelated research questions. Firstly, it seeks to study how thrillers can contribute to our knowledge of British national identity and how the genre’s inner structure matches the complexities, tensions, and conflicts defining national identity.
