Sumario:A prospective study on 300 morbidly obese patients who underwent gastric bypass in the province of Girona with a follow-up of 5 years.More female (288/12), mean age 43.5 years, mean weight 118.7 kg, mean BMI 46.1 kg/m2. Mean PEWL ranged between 67% and 75%, mean PEBMIL ranged between 73% and 82% in the five years of follow-up. Considerable decrease in BMI to achieve and maintain a normal or close to normal body weight. Resolution of hypertriglyceridemia, hyperuricemia, urinary incontinence; healing 98% hypercholesterolemia, 93% DM2, 88% arterial hypertension. Early postoperative morbidity rate was 11% and long-term was 21%. At 5 years there were only 6 morbidly obese and more than half of the patients were overweight or normal weight. The quality of life is excellent in 82%, very good in 11% and good in 7%.Gastric bypass in morbidly obese is an effective and safe technique, with good long-term results.
