This work pretends to briefly characterize the sociolinguistic situation of the languages spoken in the region. It also pretends to serve as reference of some of the actual researches about Chaco languages. At last, it is pretended to expose the linguistic policies of the countries that compel this territory.El área de Gran Chaco representa un extenso territorio que comprende parte de Argentina, Bolivia, Brasil y Paraguay. En este espacio habitan cerca de 40 pueblos originarios que hablan, al menos, 29 lenguas con distinto grado de vitalidad. Invisibilizadas durante largo tiempo, las comunidades originarias exigen hoy derechos y participación en las políticas nacionales de los países sudamericanos. Este trabajo pretende caracterizar someramente la situación sociolingüística de las lenguas habladas en el territorio. A su vez, pretende servir como referencia sobre algunas de las investigaciones actuales sobre lenguas del Chaco.
