Moreover, this silence can only be broken with the perspective provided by temporal and geographical distance. Eventually, their personal narratives challenge traditional history and allow the protagonists to experience a healing and empowering effect when navigating their individual and shared memories.En aquesta tesi argumento que dins de l'obra By the Sea d'Abdulrazak Gurnah, el silenci pot ser ocasionalment necessari i empoderador, especialment en una situació d'immigració forçada o il·legal. No obstant això, a la llarga, allunyar-se d'aquest silenci és igualment necessari. El trauma generacional de Latif i Omar experimenta un procés de curació mitjançant l'acte de trencar el seu silenci. A més a més, aquest silenci només es pot trencar amb la perspectiva proporcionada per certa distància temporal i geogràfica.
