Descripción
Sumario:In this dissertation I argue that within Abdulrazak Gurnah's By the Sea, silence can be occasionally necessary and empowering, especially in a situation of forced or illegal migration. Nonetheless, eventually striving away from it is equally necessary. Latif and Omar's generational trauma undergoes a healing process by the act of breaking their silence. Moreover, this silence can only be broken with the perspective provided by temporal and geographical distance. Eventually, their personal narratives challenge traditional history and allow the protagonists to experience a healing and empowering effect when navigating their individual and shared memories.
