Resumo:Five productive practices are described to promote process-based mathematics teaching; i.e. teaching based on thinking and doing. Assuming that "productive practices" in mathematics education are educational actions or skills that are useful for promoting meaningful mathematics learning at all levels, we consider five practices associated with the real tools that mathematics offers us to achieve this goal: thinking, arguing, communicating, connecting and representing. We conclude that these productive practices present challenges and opportunities for transforming content-based practice focused on memorising definitions and procedures
