| Sumario: | This thesis analyzes and proposes solutions to the challenges faced by the former industrial area of Rhodes and the eastern section of its waterfront, which forms part of the region. The objective is to breathe new life into this old industrial zone, which flourished from the early 1920s until the 1980s, but has since remained underutilized. The regeneration and redesign of the public space involve tools that suggest new uses and strengthen the connection between the residents, the area, and the beachfront. The approach to the plot mainly focuses on how the waterfront interacts with the city and its relationship with the urban elements. It thoroughly examines the boundaries within the urban fabric, attempting to clarify their meaning. Questions arise about what urban boundaries are, and how changes in their form impact life within a city. These questions aim to explore the connections that develop in an area over time, recognizing the crucial role that memory and collective experiences play in shaping urban landscapes. Consequently, the concept of boundaries and collective memory serve as tools in order to gather all the necessary information for the area’s urban planning. Furthermore, the use of the adaptive reuse method proposes new ways to utilize this area, connecting it with the waterfront and addressing the functional and aesthetic issues that have emerged from all of the years of neglection. The ultimate goal is the prosperity of the area, focusing on improving its image and identity, and enhancing the quality of life for its users. Finally, the methods proposed provide a foundation for applying similar strategies across the entire waterfront. A broader vision is emerging, one that concerns the development of the entire urban framework connected to the waterfront, with the ultimate goal of enhancing the city’s quality. |
