Descripción
Sumario:This paper analyzes how Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo, the first official chronicler of the Indies, relied on the five senses to describe the American nature and bring it closer to his readers. All the senses provided relevant information in understanding the New World through experience. The descriptions of animals, plants, and radically unknown practices through the senses are filled with meanings and value judgments that bring us closer to the historian’s approach to making history and the significance that the Western Indies held in the enterprise of the Hispanic Monarchy.
