| Sumario: | [EN] Paula García-Orbaneja Amoroso, wife of Carlos de Beranger, governor of Chiloé from 1768 to 1773, is just a name in her husband¿s biography. Both must endure their stay at the southern end of the American continent at a crucial time. International tensions make it a strategic point of passage between oceans, liable of being occupied by the English. The new defensive policy involves the fortification and reorganization of the military forces, to which is added the foundation of the city of San Carlos. The expatriation of the Jesuits, in turn, puts into crisis the cohesion of the territory and stresses the ecclesiastical and civil powers. In an extreme geographical context, Indians, Creoles and Spaniards form part of a society dispersed and over-masculinized by the military apparatus. This article builds, from the consultation of archives and specialized bibliography, what role a female presence plays in this context nullified by sources. |
