Sumario:The "Sacro Convento Calatrava la Nueva? (Aldea del Rey) is the most important architectural complex built by the Order of Calatrava in the Middle Ages. It was the Covent of this Order for six hundred years (c. 1217-1802) and because of this, it must be considered as a spiritual centre both for the calatravos and for the settlers in their estate. Due to the condition of ex novo of the building, it shows some spatial and artistic features that make this place unique among other Hispanic Military Convents. The aim of this research is to get closer to the beginning of Calatrava la Nueva (New Calatrava). The study will shed light on some questions such as When? Why? or How? this monument was built as well as its contributions to the avant-garde art in the most southern Castile at the beginning of the XIII century.
