| Resumo: | The first known record of the romance Esse buen rey don Alonso / el de la mano horadada is in the Cancionero de romances, printed by Martín Nucio in Antwerp in 1546 or 1547, although the romance predates these dates. This paper investigates the possible origins of this romance, proposing that it was composed in Toledo between the 1530s and 1540s. Based on these coordinates, three reception phases are proposed. The first, by Nucio, proposes a historical reading; a moral reading, somewhat later and typical of the loose sheets; and finally, a reading in a Mozarabic key, likely the most immediate to its composition. |
