This effort has culminated in the development of a patent (EP21382978, PCT/EP2022/080219), showcasing the potential of the tailor-made extremophilic HRPLs for their application in wood conversion into bleached kraft pulp and wood fibreboards as well as for kraft lignin valorisation.

Lignin represents a unique opportunity as a raw material due to its aromatic chemical composition and the abundance of leftover lignins from the pulp and paper industry (particularly from kraft pulp mills) that are currently underutilised. However, lignin's structural heterogeneity and recalcitrance to depolymerisation remain a major obstacle to its exploitation, and innovative approaches to its valorisation are needed. In this context, ligninolytic oxidoreductases such as laccases, secreted by basidiomycete fungi responsible for wood decay in nature, have been identified as potential green biocatalysts for lignin valorisation. Nonetheless, wild laccases work at acidic pH and mild temperatures, conditions that are often far from the indusrrial operation conditions. Fortunately, directed evolution makes it possible to confer new functionalities to wild-type enzymes and adapt their properties to the desired application conditions...La lignina es una materia prima renovable vital para las biorrefinerías, que son de gran relevancia en la búsqueda de soluciones industriales sostenibles, debido a su composición aromática y a la gran cantidad de lignina sobrante de la industria de la pasta y el papel (sobre todo de las fábricas de pasta kraft). Sin embargo, la heterogeneidad estructural de la lignina y su recalcitrancia a la despolimerización siguen siendo un obstáculo importante para su explotación, por lo que se necesitan enfoques innovadores para poder valorizarla. En este contexto, las oxidorreductasas ligninolíticas como las lacasas, secretadas por hongos basidiomicetos responsables de la descomposición de la madera en la naturaleza, se han identificado como potenciales biocatalizadores sostenibles para la valorización de la lignina. No obstante, las lacasas naturales funcionan a pH ácido y temperatura ambiente, condiciones que a menudo distan mucho de las exigentes condiciones industriales.
