This is carried out using data on fraud victims from 2 editions (2015 and 2017) of the Catalan Public Security Survey (n = 1177). The findings show that online fraud victims are younger and have a higher education level. Regarding impact, few significant determinants of financial losses are found, but annoyance and psychological consequences are higher in offline fraud and can be influenced by variables such as the victim’s sex, financial situation or opinion regarding safety in their local area. Interestingly, despite the consequences being lower, online fraud is more likely to be considered a crime by the victim. Finally, the implications for policy and practice are discussedEl fraude es uno de los crímenes prototípicos que originaron el debate sobre el “vino viejo en botellas nuevas” haciendo referencia al cibercrimen. Sin embargo, también constituye un problema cuyo impacto aún suele ser malinterpretado o subestimado. Con el fin de ampliar el debate al contexto español y poner de relieve las consecuencias que sufren las víctimas del fraude en la era digital, este estudio presenta una serie de modelos de regresión para analizar las diferencias entre los determinantes del fraude online y offline, así como entre los factores asociados con el impacto -económico, psicológico y molestias- derivado de la victimización. En este estudio se utiliza una muestra de víctimas de fraude compilada a partir de las 2 ediciones de 2015 y 2017 de la Encuesta de Seguridad Pública de Cataluña (n = 1177). Los resultados muestran que las víctimas de fraude online son más jóvenes y tienen un nivel de educación más alto. En cuanto al impacto sufrido, se encuentran pocos predictores significativos de las pérdidas económicas, pero el impacto psicológico y las molestias causadas son mayores en el fraude offline, pudiendo ser influenciados por variables como, el sexo, la situación económica o la opinión de la víctima sobre la seguridad local. Curiosamente, a pesar de que las consecuencias son más leves, es más probable que el fraude online se considere un delito por la víctima.
