Descripción
Sumario:[EN] This article analyses the life of Juan Bautista Marcaida, a Manila merchant of Basque origin who, in the mid-nineteenth century, had interests in the industrial and agricultural sectors of the Philippines and was involved in the trafficking of Asian workers. Through this case, we will make an approach to the relations of businessmen based in the Philippines with the colonial State, to the modes of socialisation of these businessmen and to their reactions to a changing economic panorama.
