| Resumo: | Globally it is estimated that a third of food production is wasted. Food loss and waste (FLW) is a problem that very negatively affects the environment, whether at a social, ecologic or economic level. It is for these reasons that innovative proposals are needed to promote and facilitate the prevention and reduction of FLW along the food chain. In this final master's thesis, emphasis is placed on the waste that exists in supermarkets. Together with a study of the current situation in terms of legislation, quantified data and existing initiatives, the first practical case of the work shows the statistical analysis of donations to social organizations made in two shops of the Plusfresc supermarket chain. Next, in the second practical case, an innovative technological proposal is presented and it has the main objective of managing FLW in supermarkets in a more efficient way. This consists, firstly, in generating QR (Quick Response) GS1 (Global Standards One) codes that include the expiration dates (ED) or best before date (BBD) of the products, in order to associate them with the product identifiers and be able to monitor their expiration. Secondly, it involves the development and design of a proof of concept for a mobile application called Approfita¿m. This demonstrates that is possible to read the ED and BBD of the QR codes, and send them to a database that can be consulted and filtered based on the days remaining to reach the ED or BBD of the registered products. Finally, future lines of work are also proposed for a later implementation of the project. |
