| Sumario: | Almost all living cells harbour molecular circadian clocks that synchronize physiological functions with the 24 hours day-night cycle. This physiological phenomenon is known as circadian rhythms. Light is the main zeitgeber of circadian rhythms in all the eukaryotes and prokaryotes. Upon receiving the light impulse, the master pacemaker in eukaryotes and the unicellular prokaryotes initiates a new cycle of circadian rhythms that generate as well as regulates all other physiological processes and behavioural outputs like sleep-wake cycle, cell division, reproduction etc.,constituting the basic mechanism of circadian rhythms. Other than light, temperature, feeding and fasting are also important zeitgebers of circadian rhythms.
