Sumario:The efficient distribution of goods in urban areas is a critical aspect of urban logistics, especially in densely populated regions such as the Barcelona Metropolitan Area. This study investigates strategies to optimize urban logistics through a comprehensive analysis of location and routing techniques focused on the industrial polygons within the area. We highlight how industrial displacement poses a significant challenge to urban logistic, primarily due to the need to accommodate growing urban populations and industries. To address this challenge, the study proposes the establishment of logistics centers in peripheral areas where key industrial polygons are located, where each designated to serve a specific service area. The research methodology is structured into two main components: a location analysis and a routing analysis. The location analysis evaluates the suitability of industrial estates in supporting the local population, considering factors such as location and available built area. Moreover, the routing analysis assesses the impact of industrial polygons on the city's network, focusing on optimizing routes to minimize distance traveled and associated environmental impacts. To address these research questions, operations research algorithms such as the maximum covering facility location problem and the capacitated vehicle routing problem were employed. Results from the location analysis highlight the inequality between industrial estates along the Llobregat River compared to those along the Besos River, particularly those near the urban core. This underscores the importance of strategic location planning in maximizing the efficiency and effectiveness of industrial activity. Furthermore, the routing analysis demonstrates significant benefits of a more distributed industrial space, including reduced distance traveled and associated benefits such as fewer vehicles on the roads and the externalities associated with them. These findings emphasize the importance of integrating efficient routing strategies into urban logistics planning to achieve sustainable urban development goals. This thesis provides valuable insights into the optimization of urban logistics in the Barcelona Metropolitan Area through strategic location analysis and routing techniques tailored to industrial polygons. By identifying optimal locations and optimizing transportation routes, urban logistics can effectively support economic and social growth while minimizing its environmental impacts.
