| Sumario: | The microbiologic quality of the groundwater in the alluvial aquifer of the Vega de Granada is acceptable. Nevertheless, almost 20% of the points sampled present low to moderate degrees of faecal contamination. These cases are closely related with leaks and the discharge of urban wastewater. A further contributory factor is the existence of high-risk irrigation practices, such as inundation with untreated (or ineffectively treated) urban wastewater where the piezometric levels are less than 20 m below ground level. Consequently, the incidence of contamination detected corresponds to specific situations or practices, in particular geographic areas and is generally of very limited duration |
