| Sumario: | The Cenozoic deformation of the Iberian lithosphere along a NW-SE profile from the northern Duero Basin to the southern Tajo Basin, crossing Spanish Central System, has been analysed by means of a numerical simulation based in the finite element method. Lateral and vertical rheological heterogeneities, Tertiary sedimentary overburden and the Alpine compressional tectonic stresses have been considered. Numerical results support a mechanism of lithospheric folding for the development of the chain and basins and a thicker lower crust below the central part of Iberia |
