Sumario:The seasonal cycle of chlorophyll concentration has been examined in the Bay of Biscay and adjacent regions along the track of the Ferry Pride of Bilbao (Bilbao-Porstmouth) using SeaWiFS satellite data. The spring bloom of phytoplankton develops regularly in the oceanic region of the Bay of Biscay from mid March to the beginning of May with peak chlorophyll concentrations ranging 2-4 mg Chla m-3. Autumn blooms of phytoplankton are also detected episodically in the southern area and Celtic shelfbreak around November-December. On summer (July-August) exceptional blooms of phytoplankton (the dinoflagellate Karenia mikimotoi) develop in the Western English Channel with chlorophyll concentrations as high as 40mg SeaWiFS Chla m-3.The pluriannual satellite study is extended to the central Cantabrian shelf (southern Bay of Biscay) where a regular section is sampled monthly since 1991.
