Sumario:One of the most popular and practiced martial art in Spain is karate. The introduction and development of karate in Spain occurred in the middle of the 60’s, followed by a progressive evolution until the mid 70’s and a sequential decrease until the present day. According to data from the C.S.D. concerning licenses of practitioners, karate is the second martial sport with the highest number of licenses after judo. This evolution of the practice has resulted in the publication of a considerable amount of monographs relating to this martial art. In this way, the present study represents a bibliometric analysis of the production of karate books in Spain, studying the total number of monographic researchs, monographic researchs per decade and the production by nationality, and based on the previous bibliographic works about martial arts in this country. The results show a considerable amount of books about karate, achieving the reprints almost half of this amount. The development of this production grows exponentially in the 70’s and after that it decreases slowly. The books have been written mainly by Spanish and Japanese authors, followed by Italian and French writers, showing partially the relationship between the spread of this practice in Spain and the masters who did it. In summary, the development of the bibliographic production about karate can be related to the amount of karate practitioners along its history.
