The purpose of this study is to establish the relationship between family functionality and alcohol consumption among high school adolescents in Zone 7 of Ecuador (Provinces of El Oro, Loja and Zamora Chinchipe), in addition to characterizing family, family functionality and sociodemographic characteristics of the object population. For this, a descriptive, analytical, cross-sectional study was made. In the analysis of the continuous variables the mean was determined, standard deviation, for the categorical variables, frequencies and prevalences were obtained with their respective confidence intervals, while in the bivariate analysis the Chi-Squared Test was determided. Among the results: 51.5% were men and 48.5% women; no association was found between family functionality and alcohol consumption (p> 0.05); statistically significant differences were found (p <0, 05) when analyzing family functionality, alcohol consumption mediated by intervening variables such as age, sex, province of residence and subcategory of absent parents. Therefore, it is concluded that the age of onset of alcohol consumption is 14.8 years, the low risk consumption (40%) predominates in the analyzed sample and there is no relationship between family dysfunction and alcohol consumption in this population group.
