Sumario:Tobacco is a drug that affects all ages, especially the adolescent who is in a stage of profound changes such many physical, social and psychological. In this context the study aims to determine the relation of family functionality to tobacco consumption in high school adolescents. A prospective, descriptive and cross - sectional study was carried out, with a population of adolescents of 66856 and a sample of 960 adolescents aged 15 to 19 years of first, second and third year of high school in the educational institutions of Zone 7 Ecuador, simple random probabilistic sampling was used. The information was gathered through a survey conducted with general and sociodemographic data, the perception of family functionality (FF-SIL) and closed questions related to tobacco consumption. Data were analyzed using the Chi2 statistical test, p value, Cramer's V, and the odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). We found 366 adolescents, equivalent to 38.2% who had used tobacco at some time in their lives, with a mean age of onset of consumption of 14.49 years. The use of Tobacco was associated with membership in a dysfunctional family (OR: 1.66, 95% CI: 1.25 - 2.19), friends' consumption (0R: 1.78, 95% CI: 1.35 - 2.35); Therefore, are considered as risk factors for adolescent tobacco use. In conclusion, smoking prevention should focus on the family and the environment of the adolescent. Keywords: smoking, adolescents, family, risk factors
