The proposal of this paper consists of thinking on the parenthesis as a folding operation. With this choice, “a style continuously cut by parenthesis that puts the brakes on the progress of the story” as was framed by Manuel Corrales, is no longer appreciated. On the other hand, the novel is seen as a tumultuous narrative that incorporates and wraps joyful elements to the story. Also, the parenthesis used by Icaza is identified as a resource for displaying sardonic phrases which are used for defining some of his characters.En este trabajo se realiza una lectura del uso del paréntesis en Huasipungo de Jorge Icaza, notando que su número incrementa en sus diferentes versiones —aquí se comparan la primera, de 1934, y la definitiva de 1960—. La propuesta consiste en pensar al paréntesis como una operación de plegado. Con esta elección, se deja de apreciar en Huasipungo “un estilo continuamente flagelado por paréntesis que frenan en seco la marcha del relato”, como lo formulaba Manuel Corrales, y se opta por ver la novela como una narración tumultuosa que incorpora y envuelve elementos gozosos al relato.
