description Objective. The aim of this paper is to describe the distinguishing features of the postgraduate programs at Universidad Nacional (UNA), Costa Rica. This is done by characterizing the main research actions aimed at promoting academic research in science, technology, art, culture, and education in these programs. All these programs correspond to the Postgraduate Studies System at UNA (SEPUNA in Spanish). Method. This quantitative cross-sectional study examines information from a population of 1,400 students and 597 professors who participated in these programs between 2018 and 2020. The survey was used as a research technique; applying two questionnaires, one aimed at the student population with 698 responses and another at the teaching staff, with 194 responses in total. Results. The results show that the research conducted in the postgraduate programs requires the formulation and strengthening of research lines and research groups; both students and faculty are marginally dedicated to postgraduate studies, with a focus on teaching; professors participate significantly in the supervision of Final Graduation Projects; and it is identified by students and faculty that library services are the greatest stimulus that the college carries out in its postgraduate programs, but that the sense of self-efficacy of the student body needs to be strengthened within the postgraduate programs studied. Conclusions. The SEP and the Vice-Rectorate for Research must take action to create a scenario with more incentives and more time for research as a basis for the implementation of research lines and groups of postgraduate programs.

El estudio pretende diagnosticar el desempeño de los programas de posgrado de la Universidad Nacional (UNA), por medio de la caracterización de la acción sustantiva de investigación, a fin de promover políticas de estímulo a la producción de la ciencia, tecnología, arte, cultura y educación; tomando como años de estudio, el periodo 2018-2020. Metodología. La investigación fue de carácter cuantitativo y transversal; y estableció como población de estudio a 1400 estudiantes y 597 docentes del periodo 2018-2020 de los posgrados del Sistema de Estudios de Posgrado de la UNA. Se utilizó la encuesta como técnica de investigación; se aplicaron dos cuestionarios, uno dirigido a la población estudiantil con 698 respuestas y otro al personal docente, con 194 respuestas en total. Resultados. Los resultados obtenidos evidencian que la investigación realizada en los posgrados: requiere de la formulación y fortalecimiento de líneas de investigación y de grupos de investigación; tanto estudiantes como docentes se dedican periféricamente al posgrado siendo la docencia su mayor énfasis; está orientada en gran medida a la producción científica y no la producción tecnológica ni artística; las personas profesoras participan significativamente en la supervisión de trabajos finales de graduación; y se identifica por estudiantes y docentes que los servicios de biblioteca son el mayor estímulo que realiza la Universidad en sus estudios de posgrado, pero que se debe fortalecer el sentido de autoeficacia del estudiantado dentro de los programas de posgrado en estudio. Conclusiones. Es necesario emprender políticas desde el SEP y la Vicerrectoría de Investigación, orientadas a aumentar el estímulo a profesorado y estudiantes para la investigación y a conformar líneas y grupos de investigación en los posgrados.Objetivo. O artigo visa diagnosticar o desempenho dos programas de pós-graduação da Universidade Nacional (UNA), por meio da caracterização da ação substantiva de pesquisa, no intuito de promover políticas de estímulo à produção de ciência, tecnologia, arte, cultura e educação; considerando como anos de estudo, o período 2018-2020. Metodologia. A pesquisa foi quantitativa e transversal; e estabeleceu como população de estudo 1.400 alunos e 597 professores do período 2018-2020 da pós-graduação do Sistema de Pós-Graduação da UNA. A pesquisa foi utilizada como técnica de investigação; aplicando dois questionários: um pra estudantes de programas de pós-graduação, com 698 respostas, e outro ao corpo docente, com 194 respostas. Resultados. Os resultados obtidos mostram que a pesquisa realizada nos cursos de pós-graduação: requer a formulação e fortalecimento de linhas de pesquisa e grupos de pesquisa; tanto os alunos como os professores dedicam-se perifericamente à pós-graduação, sendo o ensino a sua principal ênfase; É largamente orientado para a produção científica e não para a produção tecnológica ou artística; os docentes participam significativamente da orientação dos Projetos Finais de Graduação; é identificado por alunos e professores que os serviços de biblioteca são o maior estímulo que a Universidade realiza em sua pós-graduação, mas que o senso de autoeficácia do corpo discente deve ser fornecido dentro dos programas de pós-graduação em estudo. Conclusões.
