The story recreates the differences between the interests of the metropolis and those of the colony, with the evocation of several positions that struggled there. The point of view that prevails in the end is the one of the author, defender of the non separation of Cuba from the metropolis.El tratamiento de la independencia de Cuba en la novela española del siglo XIX es el asunto que abordamos en este trabajo. Se escribieron muy pocas novelas sobre ello, salvo, entre otras, El Separatista (1895) de Eduardo López Bago. El relato recrea las diferencias entre los intereses de la metrópoli y los de la colonia, con la evocación de las varias posiciones que allí se debatieron.
