The objective of this methodology implementation was to determine the impact of the use of the aforementioned social networks to develop teaching and learning in a formal educational context. The pedagogical proposal was based on the implementation of eight teaching strategies designed by the author of this document. At the end of the intervention process a series of research tools to the participating student population were given, and some strengths and weaknesses of social networks Facebook and Twitter as educational environments were obtained.Recibido: 19/08/2014 Aceptado: 06/30/2016Durante el primer semestre del año 2013 se implementó un conjunto de experiencias de enseñanza y aprendizaje en el curso Estructuras discretas para informática utilizando como principales medios de interacción social las redes Facebook y Twitter. Lo anterior formó parte de las responsabilidades asociadas a un proyecto de investigación en docencia inscrito en la Escuela de Informática de la Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica (UNA). El objetivo de esta implementación metodológica consistió en determinar el impacto del uso de las redes sociales anteriormente citadas, para desarrollar procesos de enseñanza y aprendizaje en un contexto educativo formal. La propuesta pedagógica se fundamentó en la aplicación de ocho estrategias didácticas diseñadas por el autor del presente documento. Al finalizar el proceso de intervención se administraron una serie de instrumentos de investigación a la población estudiantil participante, y se obtuvieron algunas fortalezas y debilidades de las redes sociales Facebook y Twitter como entornos educativos.
