description This research is based on the design and application of a document analysis file in the photographs used to cover the coup d'état that took place in Chile in 1973. This documentary file was applied to 75 photographs published by the editions of the ABC Madrid and Sevilla, La Vanguardia Española and Revista Triunfo, during the days 12 to 22 September of the year mentioned. The file used had the objective of clarifying the content, morphology and context of the photographs, together with their interactions with the elements of journalistic design, framed in the production process of press photography, for which documentation concepts were applied, analysis of preference zones and elements of paralinguistic enunciation, complemented by the quantification of the results, which allowed determining the use and function of press photographs through two markedly different visual strategies between the editions of the ABC and the remaining publications.
