According to current legislation, the application of these precautionary procedures depends directly on the degree of knowledge of the nursing staff about how to handle 131I, the radioisotope used in iodotherapy. This paper presents a critical assessment of the precautionary and handling procedures adopted by iodotherapy nursing staff, using an instrument of analysis validated by a pretest and applied to the nursing team of the iodotherapy inpatient units of three hospitals (A, and B – public; C – private), analyzing the specific knowledge of the nursing staff and their observance of standards. A comparative analysis revealed significant differences in the iodotherapy procedures carried out by the nursing teams in the hospitals of this study. The precautionary procedures and the infrastructure’s suitability for the application of iodotherapy depend essentially on the control of competent agencies, the specific knowledge and supervision of a healthcare professional responsible for Nuclear Medicine, and support from the top management of the healthcare provider.Investigações sobre os procedimentos de precaução e manipulação dos rejeitos radioativos, gerados na iodoterapia, são muito pouco discutidas na literatura. A aplicação destes procedimentos de precaução, atendendo às normas da legislação vigente, depende diretamente do grau de conhecimento da equipe de enfermagem na manipulação do 131I, radioisótopo empregado na iodoterapia. Este trabalho apresenta uma avaliação crítica dos procedimentos de precaução e manipulação adotados pela equipe de enfermagem na terapêutica da iodoterapia utilizando um instrumento de análise, validado por um pré-teste e aplicado à equipe de enfermagem da unidade de internação da iodoterapia, em três hospitais (A, B - filantrópicos; C - privado), analisando: conhecimento específico da equipe de enfermagem e atendimento às normatizações. A análise comparativa mostrou significativa diferença dos procedimentos realizados na iodoterapia pela equipe de enfermagem nos hospitais estudados.
