| Sumario: | Investigations into the precautionary and handling procedures of radioactive wastes generated in iodotherapy have been little discussed in the literature. According to current legislation, the application of these precautionary procedures depends directly on the degree of knowledge of the nursing staff about how to handle 131I, the radioisotope used in iodotherapy. This paper presents a critical assessment of the precautionary and handling procedures adopted by iodotherapy nursing staff, using an instrument of analysis validated by a pretest and applied to the nursing team of the iodotherapy inpatient units of three hospitals (A, and B – public; C – private), analyzing the specific knowledge of the nursing staff and their observance of standards. A comparative analysis revealed significant differences in the iodotherapy procedures carried out by the nursing teams in the hospitals of this study. The precautionary procedures and the infrastructure’s suitability for the application of iodotherapy depend essentially on the control of competent agencies, the specific knowledge and supervision of a healthcare professional responsible for Nuclear Medicine, and support from the top management of the healthcare provider. |
