| Sumario: | The purpose of this study was evaluate the laboratory diagnosis of pertussis by the Regional Laboratory Center of the Institute Adolfo Lutz, São José do Rio Preto – X, between April 2001 and March 2011. A total of 508 samples was performed using Reagan-Lowe (RL) medium, with 10% sheep blood and cephalexin 40 μg/mL for transportation and culture. The RT-PCR and detecting the presence of somatic antigen O1 were performed at IAL Central, Sao Paulo, SP. Among the analyzed samples the total positivity was 7.%. In 293 suspected cases and 215 contacts, 27 (9.2%) and 9 (4.2%) were positive, respectively. Until 2009 october, before the deployment of RT-PCR, 321 samples were analyzed by culture with 19 (5.9%) positive cases. After this period, 187 samples were analyzed by culture and by RT-PCR with 9,1% of positivity only by PCR. In children younger than 3 months, 15 (55.6%) were positive and in less than one year, 24 (88.9%). By laboratory results, is possible to evaluate the disease compared to immunization programs and the protocol of prophylaxis and therapy. |
